How to Become a Licensed Security Guard in Ontario (Step-by-Step)

Every Ontario security guard needs a PSISA licence. Here are the exact steps — training, testing, applying — and how to land your first security job.

Step 1: Meet the basic requirements

To hold an Ontario security guard licence under the Private Security and Investigative Services Act (PSISA), you must be 18 or older, be legally entitled to work in Canada, and have a clean criminal record under the Act's eligibility rules.

Step 2: Complete the mandatory training

Ontario requires a Ministry-approved 40-hour security guard training program covering law, report writing, emergency response, use of force theory and sensitivity training — plus Emergency First Aid and CPR certification. Training is available in class and online across the province.

Step 3: Pass the provincial test and apply

After training, you book and pass the Ministry's security guard licensing test, then apply for your licence through ServiceOntario. Once your licence arrives, you can legally work as a security guard anywhere in Ontario.
